SUMMER GLASS 2009

The Chemistry of Glass

This course will give studio glass artists the opportunity of exploring the chemistry of and techniques utilized in the formulation of glass. Topics include the discussion of basic chemical principles, physical properties of the glassy state, the chemical structure of glass, and raw materials used in making glass. Safety factors and procedures used in batching glass will be presented. You will learn how to formulate clear, opal, and colored glasses. Small test batches of these formulations will be mixed and melted.

Multi-Level Glass Blowing

If you have some previous experience or are a beginning student in glassblowing, this course will enhance your experience with the tools, techniques, and concepts involved in the time-honored tradition of glassblowing, leading toward a mastery of this fine craftsmanship.

Introduction to Glass Fusing

This course will teach the fundamentals of Fusing Glass in kilns to produce functional and artistic objects. Subjects covered include: Safety, cutting glass, fusing and slumping, use of molds, torch, and kilns, different methods and materials for design (colored glass, frits, stringers, sandblasting, metals, fiber paper, etc.), finishing pieces with sanding and polishing apparatus. Experimentation is encouraged. Each student should be able to make 3 - 5 fused pieces plus glass jewelry (pendants and earrings). Course fee includes materials.

Instructor: Richard Lasiewski, D.O., D.A.B.R.  Rich is a retired Radiologist with a lifelong appreciation of Art Glass. For the past 10 years he has taken numerous courses in Art, Design, Art Glass (torchwork, fused, casting, and blowing), and metal working. He has an active torchwork and fusing studio in Arroyo Grande and has had pieces shown at many venues in the Central Coast.  This is his fifth year offering this course.

Summer Glass 2009 Refund Policy

This is a special program and the terms of the cancellation and refund policy are as follows: Withdrawal from the program must be submitted in writing prior to Friday, May 9, 2009 to receive a refund less a $100 processing fee. Withdrawal from the program on or after May 9, 2009 will result in no refund. The class has limited space.
