Introduction to Fly Fishing

This course is designed for beginners to learn fly fishing, with no experience required. Through slides, demos, and hands-on exercises, participants will learn about fly fishing equipment and techniques for streams, lakes and ponds. Students will learn some basic aquatic entomology, how to “read” water that holds fish, a bit of game fish identification and biology, and basic fly casting techniques, on grass and on a local farm pond.

Instructor Dr. Mark Shelton has been a fisherman since the age of 5, and fly-fishing since his early teens. He has fly-fished on the rivers and lakes of the central valley of California and in Sierra Nevada streams and back country lakes for more than 35 years. Dr. Shelton is an entomologist (insect biologist) who has taught at Cal Poly since 1982. He currently serves as Associate Dean in the College of Agriculture.

Pest Management for Home and Garden

Stop spending money on pesticides in your home and garden, and learn how to reduce the risk of exposure to pesticides. This course is for anyone interested in learning new ways to live reasonably and responsibly in the environment; for avid gardeners or concerned homeowners.

We humans are solely responsible for having pests in the first place. Once we own up to that, it then becomes our responsibility to change the way we do things to reduce pests and their effects. The course is a hands-on approach on how to identify pests and learning a variety of ways to manage them. One goal is to reduce pesticide usage in and around the home; less pesticide means fewer exposure risks.

Instructor David Headrick is an award winning teacher and biological control researcher with more than 20 years of field experience. He is currently a professor in the Horticulture and Crop Science Department at Cal Poly, teaching entomology, pest management, biological control and applied systematics. His research interests include ecology and biological control of citrus pests, biological control of whiteflies, ecology of invasive insects and weeds, and biology, ecology and behavior of California fruit flies. Dr Headrick received the University Distinguished Teaching Award in 2005 and serves on the California Department of Food and Agriculture’s Environmental Task Force for the light brown apple moth eradication and and control program.
