Enrolling

Four Easy Steps to Enroll

  1. View available Cal Poly Classes. NOTE: The schedule of classes is only available online, and can no longer be purchased in printed copy or .pdf format.
  2. Pick up registration materials from Cal Poly Continuing Education and University Outreach at Jesperson Hall, (Building 116), Room 101. Hours: M-F, 8am to 5 pm.
    • Registration forms are available beginning two weeks before the beginning of the
      quarter. See deadlines below. You may download the Enrollment Request form here to complete and bring to the Cal Poly Continuing Education and University Outreach office.
    • If you cannot come by the Cal Poly Continuing Education and University Outreach office, you may call (805) 756-2053 to have forms mailed, emailed or faxed to you. You will be asked to provide name, birthdate, email address, whether you have attended Cal Poly in the past and how many classes you plan to take.
  3. Get the signatures of the instructor and department chair. You can find contact information for each academic department at the Cal Poly website: www.calpoly.edu
    • Based on space availability
    • Matriculated Cal Poly students have priority
  4. Return the completed forms to Cal Poly Continuing Education and University Outreach and pay the fees
    • Go to: Jespersen Hall (Building 116), Room 101
    • Pay Regular Fees: Before the last day of 3rd week of quarter
    • Pay an Additional Late Fee of $25: After 3rd week of quarter
    • Enrollment Closed: After last day of 4th week of quarter
    • Summer dates may vary so watch deadline dates carefully.

Fees

Fees are determined by the number and type of units. Cal Poly Continuing Education fees remain comparable to, if not lower than, other CSU campuses.

Miscellaneous Course Fees
Some Cal Poly courses have a miscellaneous fee for services, materials, or facilities. Miscellaneous course fees are listed in the course schedule and must be paid to the University Cashier, Administration Building (Building 1), Room 131E.

Courses held at the Recreation Center require payment of membership in order to access the center. Fees must be paid at the Recreation Center.

FAQs

How will I know I'm registered in class?
Your name will appear on your instructor's online class roster.

What is my Empl ID and how do I get it?
Your Empl ID is your student ID number that will be issued to you automatically after you register and pay your registration fees. You may get your Empl ID from "My Cal Poly Portal."

What is "My Cal Poly Portal"?
My Cal Poly is a web portal that features information and services. Through your Cal Poly Portal you can access:

    • Empl ID
    • Course Information
    • Blackboard
    • Email
    • Campus Announcements
    • Events
    • Plus other campus activities

How do I get a Cal Poly email address to communicate with my teachers and other students?
After submitting your registration forms and fees, you will be assigned a Cal Poly email address. You will need to ACTIVATE your email address which you can do the day after your registration is processed by calling the Cal Poly Service Desk at (805) 756-7000. Click here for information on how to activate your email address.

What if my instructor uses online delivery for course material through blackboard?
You can access blackboard from your Cal Poly Portal. You can activate your portal the day after your registration is processed by calling 756-7000.

How can I find out if my courses will meet my degree requirements?
You should contact your academic advisor at the institution offering your degree to determine if your courses will meet degree requirements.

What if I can't find an open class?
If you are having difficulty finding a class, you are encouraged to view the schedule of classes and/or contact academic departments for enrollment availability.

If I am a matriculated Cal Poly student, can I take courses through Open University?
You may take courses through Open University but not concurrently. Once you enroll through Open University, a hold will be placed on your registration for the current term. The hold will be released for the next registration cycle unless you continue enrollment through Open University.

If I am a matriculated Cal Poly student, how many courses can I complete through Open University?
A maximum of 36 quarter units of Open University credit may be applied towards a Cal Poly bachelor's degree. No more than 12 quarter units of approved credit maybe applied toward a Cal Poly graduate degree, if taken prior to submission of a formal study plan. In all cases, check with your academic advisor.

Can I earn a degree through Open University?
The Open University program does not award degrees but courses completed through Open University can be applied towards a degree upon approval from the institution granting the degree.

Do I need a permission number to enroll in a class?
You do not need a permission number to enroll in courses through Open University but you do need the instructor's and department chair's approval and signatures.

Can I receive financial aid?
Only students currently enrolled in a Cal Poly degree program may receive state or federal aid. You may qualify for private loans depending upon the financial institution. Payment options are also available through the Cal Poly Continuing Education and University Outreach office.

How do I access my grades?
You can access your grades through My Cal Poly Portal beginning the first Tuesday after finals week. If you have not activated your portal, Click here for instructions to access your grades.

How do I get an official transcript of my record?
You may request an official transcript of your record through the Office of Academic Records (Building 1, Room 222). For more information on requesting an official transcript go to www.ess.calpoly.edu/_records/forms.

Where can I buy my textbooks?
You may purchase your textbooks and other course materials from the Cal Poly El Corral Bookstore. For more information about the El Corral Bookstore go to www.elcorralbookstore.com.

Do I get a Cal Poly ID?
After your registration is processed, call the PolyCard Customer Service Office at 756-2614 or 756-5939 to find out when your PolyCard will be available. You will need to provide your Cal Poly email address and pay a $5 fee. The PolyCard Customer Service Office is located in the Metro Station (Building 19).

What are the benefits of getting a Cal Poly ID Card (PolyCard)?
You can use your PolyCard for access to the campus library including online library services, the Campus Express Club, laser printing in campus computer labs, access to the Recreation Center plus other services offered on campus. Some services are limited for Open University students. Click here for more information on using your Cal Poly ID.

Can I use the Cal Poly Recreation Center?
After submitting your registration forms and fees you can pay a membership fee to the Recreation Center in order to gain access. You will also need a Cal Poly ID (PolyCard) and you must be at least 16 years old.

Can I use the Cal Poly Health Center?
Only students admitted to a Cal Poly degree program paying the additional Health Center Fees are eligible to use Health Center Services.

Do I need a parking permit to park on Campus?
Parking permits are required, 7:00 am to 10:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday, during Summer Quarter and during academic breaks. All other parking restrictions (red zone, disabled, etc.) apply 24 hours, 7 days a week. Parking permits are not valid in metered parking spaces.

Where do I get a parking permit?
You may purchase a parking permit from the University Cashier's Office in the Administration Building, Room 133E, the University Police Department or from the Visitor Information Center at the Grand Avenue entrance. You may also purchase daily permits from mechanical dispensers throughout campus. Click here for more information on parking and parking fees.

What if I have a registration hold?
You will need to clear all holds before enrolling through Open University.

What if I am on academic probation or have been dismissed from the University?
You will need to obtain the appropriate approvals before enrolling through Open University.

What if I need to withdraw from a course?
To withdraw from a course you must complete a "Petition to Withdraw from a Course" form available at the Cal Poly Continuing Education Office. The instructor's and department chair's signatures are required. The approved withdrawal form must be received by Cal Poly Continuing Education no later than 4:30 pm on the last day of classes.

Will I receive a refund if I withdraw from a course?
If you submit an approved withdrawal petition prior to the first day of classes you will receive a full refund of fees paid less a $25 processing fee. You will receive a 65% refund of the fees paid if you submit your approved withdrawal petition prior to 4:30 pm on the last day of the third week of the quarter. Refunds are not authorized after the last day of the third week of the quarter. The refund schedule may vary for summer quarter so watch deadlines carefully.

What entry will be made on my transcript if I withdraw from a course?
No enrollment entry will be made for the course if you complete the withdrawal process before the last day of the third week of the quarter. If you withdraw from a course after the last day of the third week of the quarter (with the instructor's and department chair's signatures), you will receive a "W" as a final grade. Failure to complete the withdrawal process can result in a WU (withdrawal unauthorized) which is equivalent to a failing grade.

Can I audit a class?
You may audit a class through Open University by completing the Open University registration process which includes obtaining the instructor's and department chair's signatures and paying the appropriate fees. You will also need to complete a grade option form available at the Continuing Education Office (Jespersen Hall, Building 116) to request the audit. Please refer to the calendar for deadlines.

Can I change my grading option?
You may change your grading option to CR/NC by completing a grade option form available at the Continuing Education Office (Jesperson Hall, Building 116). Please refer to the calendar for deadlines.

Can I repeat a Cal Poly course for a better grade through Open University?
The Cal Poly repeat rules apply to Open University courses as well. If you are repeating a D or F you are eligible for the grade forgiveness policy, meaning that both grades will be recorded on the transcript but only the most recent grade will be reflected in the gpa calculations. If you are repeating a course with a grade of C- or above, both grades will be recorded on your transcript and averaged in your gpa calculations.
