Master of Professional Studies in Disaster Management and Homeland Security
The Master of Professional Studies in Disaster Management and Homeland Security is a professionally oriented interdisciplinary program devoted to the integration of knowledge embedded in the emerging fields of disaster management, all hazards risk protection, emergency response, border security, disaster mitigation and recovery, homeland security, global awareness, and related areas. The program focuses on both applied and theoretical aspects of disaster management and homeland security with emphasis on agency and organizational leadership development. The curriculum is designed to build on professionally related experiences obtained by students prior to entering the program.
Students successfully completing the program will:
- Have a broad-based interdisciplinary knowledge of: disaster mitigation, management and recovery; all hazards risk protection; homeland security and protection; and critical infrastructure and protection.
- Assess and formulate public policies and procedures related to the program’s areas of study and prepare appropriate implementation strategies.
- Synthesize research and data in order to construct effective and innovative strategies for responses to crisis situations.
- Construct and employ effective and cooperative leadership techniques in the preparation for, protection against, and response to natural or human caused disasters at the local, state or national level.
Students must complete a total of 45 units including a 27 unit core. Degree completion is possible in 12-15 months. Continuing Education is seeking academic approval to start the program fall 2010. The program will be offered completely online.
