Certificate in Disaster Management & Homeland Security
The Certificate in Disaster Management and Homeland Security focuses on disaster prevention, planning, preparedness, response, understanding and analyzing terrorist’s threats, mitigation and recovery. Courses in the certificate provide you with a global outlook, interpersonal skills, hands-on experiences, and emergency management abilities and skills. Coursework may also fill requirements associated with National Fire Protection Association Standard on Disaster/Emergency Management and Business Continuity Programs (1600), Certified Emergency Manager, and other professional association certifications.
The certificate is composed of seven courses offered in an online, interactive format. This delivery methodology offers students the convenience of learning online without losing the “Learn-by-Doing” educational philosophy that is the traditional hallmark of Cal Poly.
In order to earn the certificate, students must complete six of the following seven courses.

Introduction to Emergency Management in California
Emergency management emphasizing the Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) operations. Earthquake hazard used as the case to explore potential wide geographic impacts, multiple secondary hazards, and multidisciplinary problem-solving methods in natural disastersfaced by local governments and communities. No Prerequisites
Note: Classes meet via the Elluminate Online Classroom System, No class meetings on campus. Students need internet access (dial up is possible, but not recommended), a webcam, and a microphone/earphone headset.

OPTIONS FOR EARNING YOUR CERTIFICATE:
- Take online classes through Cal Poly Continuing Education and University Outreach.
- Through Continuing Education’s partnership with the California Emergency Management Agency, you can earn academic credit for selected courses offered by the California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI). These courses fulfill requirements for and may be applied toward the certificate or the master’s in disaster management and homeland security. You must register for academic credit and pay the appropriate registration fees BEFORE you start taking a class at CSTI. Retroactive credit is not available. - Students can mix and match courses taken from Cal Poly and CSTI to fulfill requirements for the Certificate. This option allows students maximum flexibility and convenience. Students can take all these courses online with Cal Poly, all their courses at CSTI or any combination.
MAXIMIZING YOUR LEARNING AND EARNING POWER
Earning your Certificate in Disaster Management and Homeland Security not only prepares you for leadership positions in these growing fields, but also can help you complete an undergraduate degree or graduate degree. The courses taken as part of the certificate are considered elective and residential credit and can count toward the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies offered through the Adult Degree Program (ADP). The ADP is Continuing Education’s undergraduate degree designed specifically for working professionals. You can also use the credit for other professional development requirements, including degree programs at other campuses of the California State University.
If you already have your undergraduate degree, courses in the certificate offered at the 400 level can be used to fulfill requirements for the Master of Professional Studies in Disaster Management and Homeland Security scheduled to start in 2010.
