Exploring the Figure in Water Media

This class will teach you how to draw and paint convincing figures and explore how to use these figures in different painting compositions. We will be using graphite pencil and water-based media -- watercolor, gouache, (opaque watercolor), and watercolor crayons in this class. Using photographs for reference you will begin by learning how to make the figure proportional and then discover how to create figures with a dimensional feel. We will focus on close observation of the attitudes and angles presented by the figures; also how to link these figures together and how to paint various types of clothing. Then we will explore how these figures can be placed or used on their own in a painting or in other types of composition: for example, landscapes or interiors. This is an exploratory class where individual expression is highly encouraged so come ready to play and expect to paint outside the lines!

Students will need to spend approximately $30 on supplies.

Sculpting the Head in Clay

In this class you will make a three dimensional model of a head in clay. After the finished sculpture has dried, the head will be fired in the kiln, and then ready for you to finish with a patina.

You will work from photographs to make a small head study. Bring a side view, a back view and a front view photograph of your model. You will use either a low-fire white porcelain clay or reddish-brown terracotta clay.

During this sculpting process you will learn the proportions of the head, how to achieve a likeness and how to sculpt the individual features: eyes, nose, mouth, ears and hair. Finishes that can be applied after the head has been fired will also be demonstrated.
