Sculpting the Head in Clay

In this class you will make a three dimensional model of a head in clay. After the finished sculpture has dried, the head will be fired in the kiln, and then ready for you to finish with a patina.

You will work from photographs to make a small head study. Bring a side view, a back view and a front view photograph of your model. You will use either a low-fire white porcelain clay or reddish-brown terracotta clay.

During this sculpting process you will learn the proportions of the head, how to achieve a likeness and how to sculpt the individual features: eyes, nose, mouth, ears and hair. Finishes that can be applied after the head has been fired will also be demonstrated.

Instructor: Tricia Reichert obtained her formal teaching credentials from Battersea College, University of London.  Tricia developed her true passion for art after moving to the USA and for the past sixteen years has studied and practiced drawing and painting in a variety of media.  She is currently a professional, commissioned portrait artist with paintings in private collections in the US and Europe. Gosh, It's Gouache!

Gouache, (pronounced gwash), is a water-based, watercolor medium that can be used in just the same way as traditional watercolor or opaquely like oil or acrylic. Mistakes can be made and corrected easily in this medium and it freely lends itself to being mixed with other water-based products. In this six-week class, through a series of small landscape studies, you will learn how to choose and mix the colors you need to paint with gouache on paper and canvas surfaces.

All of the landscape elements will be covered - skies, mountains, trees, buildings, roads, rocks, water, bushes, grasses etc. and you will learn different ways of arranging all of these elements to make the most interesting compositions. Along the way you will learn how to add other types of water-based media to the mix, e.g. crayons, pencils, transparent watercolor and even a little pastel.

At the end of the class you will have six, small landscapes to proudly display on your walls - and you will be excited and ready to paint many more!
